On Friday July 16th 2021, the hip-hop community felt another devastating and tragic loss. Rapper, record producer, and actor Biz Markie (born Marcel Theo Hall) passed away in a Baltimore hospital peacefully at the age of 57.
While the cause of death has not been officially revealed, Markie was hospitalized with Type 2 diabetes back in 2020 which left him severely ill and created ongoing health issues for the legendary artist.
Jenni Izumi, a representative of Markie’s team, provided the following written statement on behalf of the incident.
“We are grateful for the many calls and prayers of support that we have received during this difficult time. Biz created a legacy of artistry that will forever be celebrated by his industry peers and his beloved fans whose lives he was able to touch through music, spanning over 35 years. He leaves behind a wife, many family members and close friends who will miss his vibrant personality, constant jokes and frequent banter.”
Members of the hip-hop community including LL Cool J, Missy Elliott, MC Hammer, Big Daddy Kane, Q-Tip, and many more took the time to share their condolences on social media.
With a career length of over 30 years, Biz Markie developed numerous classics such as 1989’s Top 40 hit “Just A Friend,” as well as “Vapors” and songs like “Nobody Beats the Biz.” He also made appearances in Men in Black II and Empire. Markie’s legacy and impact on hip-hop culture will never be forgotten.
