TLDR: Hundreds gathered to honour Canadian hip-hop icon Bishop Brigante at his funeral service in Hamilton, Ontario, with major artists from across North America paying tribute to his legacy.
This past weekend, Hamilton’s Friscolanti Funeral Chapel became the site of a powerful sendoff for one of Canadian hip-hop’s most beloved voices. Bishop Brigante, the Scarborough-raised rapper, battle legend, actor, and community cornerstone, passed away on March 30, 2025 after a courageous battle with cancer. On Saturday, April 12, 2025, hundreds of people gathered to celebrate his life, legacy, and cultural impact.
The service, which stretched from noon to 5 p.m., drew a remarkable showing of friends, family, and collaborators from across the hip-hop community. At around 2:30 p.m., a massive group photo was taken outside the chapel, with many attendees holding up three fingers on each hand—a reference to a signature catchphrase Bishop often used to represent Section 6, the Scarborough neighbourhood he represented.
Around 3 p.m., the chapel filled with speeches from family and peers who’d witnessed Bishop’s journey from local hero to national figure. Choclair, one of Toronto’s earliest rap pioneers, delivered a heartfelt tribute. New York battle rap staples Iron Solomon and Poison Pen—longtime friends of Bishop who drove up from NYC for the service—also took the mic to share stories and memories.
The funeral’s guest list was a testament to Bishop’s reach and influence. Toronto’s own Boi-1da, OVO Hush (aka Young Tony), Kardinal Offishall, Dolo and Kwajo Cinqo from Ghetto Concept, Fito Blank, Tona, Adam Bomb, Rich Kidd, Solitair, TRA (The Rhyme Animal), and DJ MelBoogie were just a few of the names in attendance. So were battle rap figures Organik and Gully TK from King of the Dot (KOTD), where Bishop held legendary status.
Also spotted were Dan-e-o, Sayzee, KinSmuv, Pin, Strezz One, DJ Law, D.O., JD Era, Frankie Payne, Deuce Deuce from Concrete Mob, Tone Mason, Ken Masters, Dub J, 4KORNERS, King Cutt, Logik Dat Lad, Friday from We Love Hip Hop, Richie Sosa, Alias Donmillion, Ian Kamau, Sunny Diamonds, Gavin “Public” Sheppard, Mindbender Supreme, Logikal Ethix from Stolen From Africa, Zac Facts, Angelica Lisk-Hann, Kendo, Mauricio Ruiz, Keziah Myers, Money Marlo, DJ X, Sina Tash, Heavy Huddy, budding Ottawa star TwoTiime, Ian Andre Espinet, photographer Ajani Charles, and even more than that.
Members of Bishop’s Section 6 family were present in full force—coming together for a powerful group tribute during the speeches that reminded everyone just how deep his community ties ran. One of the most emotional moments came when Bishop’s son, Lito, took the mic to honour his father’s legacy in front of the packed chapel.
For someone who gave so much of himself to hip-hop, it was a day that showed just how much hip-hop gave back—through love, loyalty, and the lasting echoes of his impact. And if Saturday made anything clear, it’s that Bishop Brigante’s legacy is in good hands—with a community ready to carry it forward.
