Classified opens up about considering retirement & his love for making music

Earlier this week, award-winning Canadian rapper Classified took to social media to reveal that he had been struggling with whether or not he should retire.

In a lengthy heartfelt post, Class explained that he had attempted to call it quits a few times, but his love for making music drew him back in each time. Eventually, he learned to embrace the fact that he enjoys being creative and will continue to create as long as that excitement remains.

The message started in an image with the words:

“Sometimes I wonder why I still make music.. is it for myself? is it for the fans / listeners? is it to prove that I can still do this? sometimes i feel like i did everything i wanted to do, I got to tour the world, i’ve had hit songs on the radio, i’ve got to work my heroes, i got to turn this hobby… something i loved doing… into a job that has supported myself and my family for years now.”

And it continued in the caption of the post:

“I know I tried to retire a few times cause i didn’t think I had anything else to write about or bring to the music world..but as life went on and I grew up more, new ideas / songs would pop into my head. And when my kids were at school or my wife was busy and I had free time, i would always go back into my studio and make beats cause i still love doing that the same way when i was 17…more of a hobby. Then as soon as i’d make a beat I loved…topics/ ideas would pop into my head and before i knew it. i was working on a new song/ project. And as soon as I finished them, i wanted people to hear it. Before i knew it, i would be shooting a video, building plans for another show/ tour .. shit even starting to do tik toks (cause they say thats the best way to spread new music these days, ha).

I think i’m realizing now that being creative and making music and having that outlet is what keeps me exctied about it. I have a hard time sitting still, always have, and music was that thing that always let me slow down and reflect on life and what it is to me, it gave me purpose, and i think tha’ts something we all need.

thank you to all the fans, old and new who have been along for the ride for the last 25 years.. from my first music video ‘unpredictable’ in 2000,, to me winning my first award for ‘no mistakes’ at the muchmusic video awards in 2006… to my latest release ‘People’ which came out last month.

i just finished the last song for my new project, 10 songs done. and I want to take my time releasing it to the public. So i’m going to release a new song every 6 weeks.. .with this friday being the next song and video.

its called ‘Wonder’ cause lately… i’ve been doing that a lot. thanks for staying tuned.”

Classified released his new “Wonder” single earlier today, along with the accompanying music video directed by Brothers Boyd (Class and his brother Mike Boyd).
