TLDR: Netflix has released the official teaser for the highly anticipated Happy Gilmore 2, with Adam Sandler returning to the role that made him a cult comedy icon.
Netflix has officially released the first teaser for the highly anticipated sequel Happy Gilmore 2, set to hit theatres on July 25. The follow-up to the 1996 cult classic sees Adam Sandler reprising his role as the foul-mouthed, hockey-loving golfer whose unconventional swing and unfiltered mouth turned him into an unlikely sports hero.
Directed by Kyle Newacheck (Murder Mystery), the sequel features returning stars Julie Bowen as Happy’s love interest, Virginia Venit, and Christopher McDonald as the smug, sharp-tongued Shooter McGavin. Adding to the excitement, Ben Stiller will reprise his fan-favourite role as Hal, the sadistic nursing home orderly whose twisted brand of elder care made him one of the original film’s standout villains. Also, the director of the original Happy Gilmore—who also appeared in the film—Dennis Dugan, returns as the character Doug Thompson.
New to the cast is Bad Bunny (possibly being billed as his real name Benito Martínez Ocasio), whose role remains under wraps but is rumoured to be a rival golfer whose flashy style challenges Happy both on and off the green.
Other names currently associated with the project on IMDB include American actress and producer Margaret Qualley, Ethan Cutkosky (aka Carl from Shameless), American filmmaker and film editor Benny Safdie, Nick Swardson, Kym Whitley (listed as character Bessie), Dani Deetté, Snack Shack actor Conor Sherry, American football player Travis Kelce, retired golfer Lee Trevino (listed as playing himself), wrestler Maxwell Friedman (aka MJF), Michael James Nuells (listed as the character Golf Tournament Spectator), and Jacqueline Sophia London (listed as the character Golf Spectator).
Written by Sandler and longtime collaborator Tim Herlihy (Billy Madison, The Wedding Singer), the sequel promises to blend the original’s absurd humour with a modern edge. The teaser gives fans a nostalgic glimpse of Happy’s signature slapshot swing while hinting at new comedic conflicts and emotional stakes. On social media, Sandler wrote: “Hope you all have fun and thanks for all the great times.”
Netflix’s decision to release the film in theatres before making it available for streaming underscores its confidence in the project’s box office potential. The original Happy Gilmore remains a cult favourite among fans of golf, hockey and Sandler’s early work, and the sequel looks poised to capture that same magic for a new generation.
