At a time when it often feels like the U.S. is teetering towards another internal conflict, the new film Civil War couldn’t come at a worse time to stoke the flames. Or perhaps, it’s the best time to convey the possible consequences of what this type of timeline could lead to for both democrats, republicans, and independents, alike.
Yesterday, A24 released the final trailer for Civil War which was directed by Alex Garland, and stars Kirsten Dunst, Wagner Moura, Stephen McKinley Henderson and Cailee Spaeny. It’s described as a dystopian future America, where a team of military-embedded journalists races against time to reach Washington, D.C., before rebel factions overrun the White House.
Despite there being a lot of hype for the movie, early reviews make it seem like the overall theme of the film is different than what the trailers are making it out to be.
“This is not a movie about documenting the unfolding events of a modern American Civil War like the trailers lead you to believe,” wrote Daniel Rindone on Google Reviews. “This is a movie about self-centred and complacent journalists, and not a good one at that.”
Another viewer named Justin R took issue with the realism of the plot, as well as the pacing of the overall storyline.
“This movie has a stark dissonance between expectation and reality. It is not (as the trailers would have you believe) some epic, post-apocalyptic war movie. There are no General’s in dark rooms, set-piece battles or grand speeches and social commentaries. No exposition or motives for why the war is taking place and how it’s progressing. Instead we get Civil war in microcosm – following a group of photojournalists as they travel across a war-torn Country. The pacing is slow and ponderous. It plods along from one moment to the next and, despite its attempts to be introspective, just doesn’t make you care about any of the main characters.”
Civil War will be officially released in Canada tomorrow, April 12, 2024. Check out the final trailer below.
