It’s no secret that LeBron James is huge fan of music, with a ton of celebrity friends who happen to be musicians or recording artists. Now, the Lakers star is thinking about taking his love for music further by indicating he’d like to release a compilation.
Taking to Twitter on Thursday, Feb. 18, King James wrote: “My love for music is INSANE!!! I think I’m going to do a album. Oh no I won’t be rapping or anything like that. I’m not crazy, I know what I’m great at, but I tell you one thing I do have. So many friends that can.”
James has already taken the helm on a big project as A&R/Executive Producer—working with 2 Chainz on his 2019 album Rap or Go to the League—but this likely provide a larger variety of artists involved. It’s also, quite possibly, going to be a great opportunity for more obscure artists that James might check for to get some shine.
If nothing else, James’ love for music has been documented for quite some time, and it won’t be a surprise for many to see him exploring this new space.
“Anything I do has to be organic to me, and I wouldn’t be who I am today without music,” James told Vanity Fair in 2019.
“My love for music, my love for hip-hop music … what it does for me in my training, what it’s done for me in my life … There are days I’ve gotten through because of music—great artists who’ve been able to use their penmanship to get me through days. So this was just organic to me.”
The 2 Chainz experience has put him in a great position to expand on creating musically, and apply what he’s already learned. He was highly influential on how Rap or Go to the League turned out, and proved he knows a thing or two about sequencing music and creating a compelling release.
“No, no. I’m no engineer, no beat-maker, no producer,” said James on working with 2 Chainz.
“It was more of an A&R thing. I helped him put the track list together, sequencing, which songs should flow: which song should be first, which one should be last, how to end the album, what should fall in the middle. Executive producer was kind of a title that was given to me.”
Of course, the tweet from James did end up with “thinking out load,” which was probably intended as, “thinking out loud,” which means he might never follow through on this declaration. That hasn’t stopped online chatter speculating on who the NBA legend would feature.
