Earlier this week, HipHopCanada stopped by The Bentway in Toronto for the launch of Buckets Are Life, a new campaign by KFC Canada celebrating the opening of the world’s first winterized basketball court.
Located at 800 Fleet Street—under of Canada’s busiest highways, the Gardiner Expressway—the KFCourt will be open from Jan. 26 to Feb. 22, 2023, open seven days a week to the public, rain, snow or shine. During the campaign period, people will be able to book 45 minutes of private court time for just $5 which is then being donated to a local charity, Jump Thru Hoops. Bookings can be made every day except Thursday, and available times can be found on KFCourt.ca.
Canadian legend and basketball fan Skratch Bastid, a three-time Scribble Jam champ and two-time JUNO Award nominee, was on hand for the KFCourt launch, providing a perfect and memorable soundtrack for the event. HipHopCanada’s own Richniques was able to connect with the acclaimed DJ for a brief interview before he kicked off his set.
“In essence, DJing is playing the right song, at the right time,” said Skratch Bastid on playing for the KFCourt crowd and players.
“So, whatever situation I’m in, I’m going to want to match the energy of the situation. Basketball is my favourite sport and actually some of the first mixtapes I ever made were mixtapes for my basketball warm-ups with my team. I was that guy.”
Along with Skratch Bastid, Richniques was also able to connect with KFC Canada’s Director of Marketing, Azim Akhtar.
“Canadians love for Finger Lickin’ Good buckets is only matched by their love of buckets on the basketball court,” said Akhtar in an earlier statement released by KFC Canada.
“That’s why we wanted to bring these two worlds together like only KFC can and create an epic winterized court that feeds Canadians’ growing passion for basketball.”
