HipHopMadness used their latest video to look at the business of payola, or ‘pay for play,’ and how it impacts the music industry. Simply put, the Merriam-Webster dictionary defines the term as an “undercover or indirect payment (as to a disc jockey) for a commercial favor (as for promoting a particular recording).”
Every industry has an underbelly. No matter how transparent things may seem, you can bet something’s pulling the strings. But if there was any real evil that hip-hop, if not the music industry in general, has been unable to escape, it’s the ongoing issue of ‘payola.’
