Last week Brampton artist Van Hill dropped a brand new Chris Rose-produced track titled “Girls That Don’t Talk Much.”
“Girls That Don’t Talk Much” is a song about the less-is-more approach. It serves as a nod to all the highly desirable women who don’t talk as much, don’t overshare, and maintain their sense of mystery.
Artistically, Van Hill is probably one of the most emotional rappers up North right now. And not in the sense that he gets caught up in his feels. It’s more of a vibe. Van channels the emotions he’s dealing with into his sound, which leads to a very chameleon style of rap.
Van is just as able to make a sadboy EP (Sad Day at Wonderland) as he is to make a lower key downtempo record like this about the appeal of mysterious women; two completely different sonic styles that are both rooted in Van’s emotional state.

Q&A: Van Hill
HipHopCanada: I feel like on a larger scale, this track is about the “less is more” approach, and how people tend to talk too much. And when you talk too much, you A) remove all your mystery and the power of mystery, and B) set yourself up to fail by talking about things you can’t necessarily achieve.
Van Hill: I don’t know. I feel like we should really cherish the sounds of the birds and the buzzing of the bees more than we allow these reckless tings to talk out loud continuously. No more getting away with this shit. I’m tired of it. Real ones know less is more. The others are just on some other shit.
HipHopCanada: I love how you and Chris stuck to the less-is-more theme by delivering such a minimalistic record. Was that an intentional thing? I feel like this track says a lot, by saying not a lot.
Van Hill: Chris is fire. He just randomly sends me shit. And more times I’d be in a type of mood that translates to words. We had no intention for it to happen this way. But it did. Shit just happens and words tend to guide actions. Well… sometimes.
HipHopCanada: Is there a certain female who inspired this track? Tell me about her, and how that relationship played out.
Van Hill: This is risky… Girls always been my muse. I love you Kola.
HipHopCanada: Tell me the story behind your cover art.
Van Hill: Ever stand behind a waterfall and enjoy the mist when you’re in the midst of it? But you’re at a safe distance because if [you get] too close the pressure of the water can destroy you? That part.
HipHopCanada: For yourself, what is the power of silence and non-disclosure?
Van Hill: If I were to tell you, I would have to kill you. Like dat.
