Pressure on the U.S. FDA to investigate PRIME Energy drink

When PRIME Energy hit our shelves in January 2022, founded by popular YouTuber’s Logan Paul and KSI, the world went wild for the caffeinated drink.

In his letter to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, Sen. Charles Schumer asked the FDA to investigate PRIME due to its extremely high levels of caffeine and its potential health risks for its younger audience.

Schumer also claimed there was little noticeable difference in the online marketing between the two drinks – energy and hydration. He warns this could lead many parents to believe they were purchasing a hydration juice for their kids, only to end up with a “cauldron of caffeine.”

The nutrition experts at totalshape.com explain that the maximum daily amount of caffeine is 400mg for a healthy adult. However, it has been revealed that one can of PRIME contains 200mg, which is equivalent to about half a dozen Coke cans or nearly two Red Bulls.

Just two cans of PRIME Energy will max out an adult’s daily caffeine intake, which can cause serious harm to it’s consumers.

How Much Caffeine Should You Consume?

The amount of caffeine you should consume can vary depending on factors such as your body weight and whether you take medication. Caffeine affects your body by inhibiting the effects of a substance in the central nervous system called adenosine, which leads to feeling less sleepy and tired for up to twelve hours. When consumed in moderation, caffeine can help you feel concentrated and refreshed.

How Much Caffeine Is Too Much?

Too much caffeine is more than 400 mg a day for healthy adults, as determined by the U.S Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as the safe upper limit. This equates to about four cups of coffee and around five cans of energy drinks.

It’s important to note that pregnant or breastfeeding women should limit their caffeine intake to 200 mg. However, you might want to consume less than the recommended amount of caffeine if you are sensitive to caffeine.

Commenting on the issue, Total Shape warns consumers that “caffeine can seriously harm your health if you exceed the recommended daily dose. Too much caffeine can cause problems such as insomnia, heart palpitations, increased heart rate, nausea, and anxiety. It is important to keep track of the amount of caffeine you consume daily to avoid these unpleasant side effects.”
