2026 JUNO Awards Add Latin Category, Update Rap Categories

TLDR: On August 5, CARAS released a press statement, “Celebrating Canada’s Diversity in Sound,” outlining major updates and exciting plans for 2026.

The Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (CARAS) is thrilled to announce new updates and enhancements to The 2026 JUNO Awards, building on its ongoing commitment to reflect the country’s evolving music landscape. This year’s changes include the introduction of a new category – Latin Music Recording of the Year – and an important eligibility refinement for Rap submissions, demonstrating CARAS’ dedication to fostering inclusivity and spotlighting Canadian talent across genres.

What’s New for 2026

Latin Music Recording of the Year

The 2026 JUNO Awards will now include a brand-new category: Latin Music Recording of the Year, celebrating the vibrant and growing contributions of Latin artists to the Canadian music scene. This crossover category will recognize excellence across all Latin American genres and languages, giving artists a platform to shine on Canada’s biggest music stage.

For full details on category eligibility, visit our Criteria by Category page.

“This new category is a milestone for the Canadian music industry. It’s a well-deserved recognition of the incredible talent, diversity, and cultural richness that Latin music brings to the Canadian soundscape. By giving them a place on Canada’s biggest music stage, we’re not only celebrating their artistry, but we are also helping promote all domestic music into one of the fastest growing markets in the world,” said Co-Chair of the category, Martín Añón (Speaking Non-English).

Ricardo Taco (Live Nation Canada), fellow Co-Chair of the Committee, said, “We are extremely grateful to The JUNOS for giving us the opportunity to elevate our music and culture through the introduction of this new category. This recognition not only highlights the growing impact of Latin music in Canada, but also gives our artists a powerful platform to share their stories, rhythms, and heritage with a wider audience.”

Updated Eligibility in Rap Categories

CARAS is also refining submission guidelines for both Rap Album/EP of the Year and Rap Single of the Year. Starting this year, vocalists must be Canadian Citizens or Permanent Residents to be eligible. This update ensures the JUNO Awards continue to spotlight homegrown voices and talent.

Co-Chairs of the Rap Committees, Marlon Wilson (Arlo Maverick) and Ricardo Chung (Warner Chappell Music Canada) said, “We’re excited about the changes coming to the Rap Category and proud to be part of a shift that better reflects the energy and evolution of the genre.”
