TLDR: The life and death of 17-year-old star athlete and rapper JokerOTV, connected to various shootings, including the murder of YNG Cheese, son of Philly legend Gillie Da King.
A new video by Trap Lore Ross is shedding light on the troubled life of Noah Scurry, better known as JokerOTV. Scurry was a star athlete in Philadelphia, but his life took a dark turn as he became heavily involved in street life. He was ultimately linked to a series of violent events, including the murder of Devin Spady, known as YNG Cheese — the son of Philly legend and podcast star Gillie Da King (formerly Gillie Da Kid).
The documentary, titled “Model Student Turned Serial Killer: The Philly Joker“, explores Scurry’s transformation from a promising high school basketball star to a feared figure in Philly’s rap and street scenes. Inspired by Heath Ledger’s portrayal of The Joker in The Dark Knight, Scurry quietly adopted the JokerOTV persona and began channeling his reality into raw, often violent music. Trap Lore Ross delves into the psychological and environmental factors that shaped Scurry’s life and pushed him deeper into the streets.
Scurry’s father revealed that his son’s slide into violence was fuelled by devastating personal losses. Within a single year, Scurry lost at least six friends to gun violence, including 16-year-old Kahree Simmons and 14-year-old Tahmair Timms — tragedies that left a deep emotional scar and hardened his outlook on life.
As Ross highlights in his video, the heartbreak didn’t end there; Scurry’s friend, Haseer Adams, was also killed in a similarly short span of time, adding to the relentless cycle of grief that surrounded him.
Scurry’s growing sense of loss reportedly pushed him toward retaliation. In May 2023, Scurry was injured in a shooting that left a man in his 60s dead. While he survived, the experience is said to have deepened his involvement in the streets and may have set him on a darker path. Trap Lore Ross suggests that the trauma and pressure to defend himself may have contributed to Scurry’s turn toward violence and his eventual rise as JokerOTV.
Trap Lore Ross’s video traces the path JokerOTV took through Philly’s rap and gang culture, highlighting how his dual identity as an athlete and rapper created tension. The documentary explores how Scurry’s music reflected the chaos and danger surrounding him — blending real-life events with his rap persona’s dark aesthetic.
Scurry was killed in a targeted shooting around 7 a.m. on Tuesday, January 15, 2025, with Philly police reporting that approximately 20 shots were fired at the teen. His death came just a day after releasing his first official music video, the Drench SZN-assisted “SWING MY DOOR,” which has already racked up over 2.6 million views in two months. While it’s unclear if the video directly led to the shooting, the timing raises serious questions.
One of the most controversial points raised in the video is Scurry’s alleged connection to YNG Cheese’s murder. In a Fox29 report, Gillie Da King revealed that police informed him Scurry was linked to his son’s death.
“Only reason I knew is because the police called me and told me once he was murdered,” Gillie said. “Cause the kid had just got shot 17 times he was walking with his mom and he got murdered and then the police notified me and let me know that he was one of the kids that was pretty much about to get locked up for the murder, but he got murdered first.”
Scurry’s life and death underscore the brutal cycle of violence gripping Philadelphia’s youth. Trap Lore Ross’s in-depth analysis raises uncomfortable questions about how street culture, loss, and rap fame intersected to create the tragic story of JokerOTV.
