TLDR: The latest album from Toronto rapper TONA, H.O.T.C. (Henny On The Congregation), is available on Bandcamp and features collaborations with top talents like Adam Bomb, Asun Eastwood, Daniel Son, Shi Wisdom, and more.
A little late on getting an article up, but to be fair, I was waiting for it to hit Spotify before pulling the trigger. I’m not sure there’s plans to get it up there anytime soon, so I’m moving forward.
And the delay in getting it up is certainly not speaking to the quality of the release. TONA has uncorked a new sonic journey with H.O.T.C. (Henny On The Congregation), an album as gritty as it is reflective. As mentioned, it’s available exclusively on Bandcamp for now, but it’s absolutely worth heading over there to take it in. The record takes listeners deep into the contrasting worlds of spirituality and rebellion—what TONA himself describes as “drinking Hennessy in the back of the church.” A metaphor for duality, the project dives into themes of real-life experiences, political consciousness, and literary-inspired storytelling.
“The title is a play on words which plays off two contradictory elements. I grew up in a very spiritual household but me and my brothers were the complete opposite. Almost as if we were drinking Hennesey in the back of the church which the theme around this album crosses with those obscure meanings which make for clever rhetorical excursions, and is meant to take the listener on a journey between my real life scenarios, political subject matters, context as well as literary titles that do not always align but have two vantage points.” – TONA
Boasting an impressive roster of collaborators, H.O.T.C. features EverythingOshauN, Shi Wisdom, Daniel Son, Asun Eastwood, Adam Bomb, and RvLr Magz, alongside production credits from heavy hitters like Kardinal Offishall, Yogi Da Producer, YNot, and The Kount. Tracks like “25 Bricks,” featuring RvLr Magz and Asun Eastwood, and “3 Words,” with Adam Bomb, bring sharp lyricism and weighty beats, while “Amen” and “Fame” showcase TONA’s lyrical sharpness and his ability to carry a record solo anytime he sees fit.
Though H.O.T.C. hasn’t yet landed on Spotify or Apple Music, TONA has been building momentum all year. Several songs off the album, including “OWTS” and “Hypnosis,” have already graced DSPs, offering fans a taste of what’s inside this spiritual-meets-street narrative.
In April, TONA teamed up with fellow Canadian rapper Sayzee for the EP Sun Is Out, presenting eight hard-hitting records packed with God-tier lyricism. Most recently, his standalone single “The Reason” has gained traction, charting as one of his most-streamed tracks on Spotify. Its raw energy is a testament to TONA’s ability to craft tracks that resonate with diverse audiences.
For those eager to experience H.O.T.C., you can stream or purchase the album on Bandcamp. It’s a potent blend of sharp penmanship and infectious production that cements TONA as a vital voice in Canadian hip-hop.
