Killer Mike, Mac Phipps & Erik Nielson to headline Rap On Trial Symposium in New Orleans

Dillard University’s Center for Racial Justice will host the Rap On Trial Symposium presented by AMP PR on Tuesday, Nov. 1.

Rappers have long had their lyrics used against them as evidence in criminal trials. Following a recent public outcry, lawmakers across the country have begun to discuss legislation that would provide guardrails on a practice that has been used to criminalize artistic expression.

The Rap On Trial Symposium provides an opportunity for the general public to learn, engage and raise awareness of this important issue. The event will feature four in-depth panel discussions and interactive educational resources. Each panel discussion centers specific subtopics within the subject matter, highlighted by nationally recognized experts in an effort to educate a wide range of audiences to create change.

“The issue of lyrics on trial is much bigger than hip-hop. It is an attack on our freedom of expression and constitutional rights,” says Mac Phipps. “I am now using my lived experience to educate and raise awareness on this issue. It is time that the musical community and the public unite to create change for artists everywhere.”

Killer Mike, Mac Phipps, and Erik Nielson, the co-author of Rap On Trial: Race, Lyrics, and Guilt in America, are headlining conversations within the event. The Symposium’s lineup of moderators and panelists also include New Orleans artist and activist Nesby Phips, The Movement Made Us co-author David Dennis Jr., Wendy Day of Rap Coalition, Tulane University professor Dr. Corey Miles, Angelique Phipps of AMP PR, BE NOLA Executive Director Adrinda Kelly, BRPD Detective Kevin Miller, VOTE’s Deputy Director Bruce Reilly, and nationally renowned journalist Leslie D. Rose.

The multi-panel event will kick off at 12 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 1 at Dillard University’s Cook Theater, with additional panels beginning at 2 p.m., 3:30pm, and the final panel at 6:30 p.m. Panel topics include: Defending Lyrics in the Courtroom: A Question of Free Speech & Racial Bias, Unpacking the Biases & Changing the Narrative, Protecting Your Art: A Panel for Hip Hop Artists & Musicians, and Policy, Change, and the Path Forward. The Rap On Trial Symposium is proudly presented by AMP PR and hosted by the Center for Racial Justice. The event is sponsored by Jetlife, Urbanlife Distribution, the Rap Coalition, We Dat’s Chicken, and Jesse Mosley Real Estate.
