Pop Smoke Murder Suspect Takes Shocking Plea Deal

TLDR: Pop Smoke murder suspect Corey Walker takes a shocking plea deal, pleading guilty to voluntary manslaughter and home-invasion robbery, as detailed in a new Law&Crime Network video.

The tragic murder of rising rap star Pop Smoke in 2020 shook the hip-hop world, and now one of the key suspects in the case has taken a plea deal that’s turning heads. In a new video from Law&Crime Network, host Elizabeth Millner breaks down the unexpected development: Corey Walker, the only adult charged in Pop Smoke’s death, has pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter and home-invasion robbery.

Walker’s plea deal comes nearly five years after the fatal shooting in Hollywood Hills that claimed the life of the 20-year-old artist, whose real name was Bashar Barakah Jackson. The Law&Crime video explores how this plea could impact the other three suspects who faced charges. Millner dives into the legal strategy behind Walker’s decision and what it might signal for the broader case.

According to the Los Angeles Times, “Corey Walker, 24, pleaded guilty Wednesday to one count of voluntary manslaughter and two counts of robbery, with firearm and gang enhancements, according to the Los Angeles County district attorney’s office.” In exchange for the plea, prosecutors dropped the more serious murder charge, sparking both relief and frustration among observers.

Walker’s attorney, Deion A. Benjamin, insisted that his client never intended for Pop Smoke to be harmed. “We send our condolences to Pop Smoke’s family, friends and loved ones,” Benjamin said. “It’s an unfortunate event and everyone loses out, but my client did not want this murder to happen.”

Walker is expected to be sentenced to 29 years at his next court appearance on February 21. Meanwhile, the Law&Crime Network video delves into how the plea might influence the fate of the other three suspects, including two juveniles who have already faced varying degrees of sentencing.
