HipHopCanada recently had the chance to attend Stay Forever: A Pat Stay Memorial Fundraiser Event, which was planned by King of the Dot and the battle rap community. The entire evening was dedicated to Pat Stay, a celebrated Canadian battle rapper who was fatally stabbed in Halifax last September. He was only 36.
KOTD co-founder Organik hosted the evening, which served as both a fundraiser for Stay’s family as well as a tribute to him and his legacy. A ton of well-known battlers participated in the Toronto-based event including DNA, Charlie Clips, Real Sikh, Lu Castro, MyVerse, Casey Jay, Saynt LA, Franchise, and more.
Along with getting to honour stay, the fundraiser gave some of the most celebrated battle rappers in the scene the ideal stage on which to showcase their skills. With their mastery of intricate wordplay and powerful lyricism, MCs engaged in a fierce literary battle–a no holds barred affair like Stay would have wanted. It was a great way to honour the memory of a renown lyricist like Stay and to celebrate the culture and art of battle rap. The atmosphere was electric as people of all ages and backgrounds came together to honour Stay’s memory and grieve for his loss.
While the various battles were taking place, well-over a $100,000 was raised for Stay’s family, who were present to see how the event honoured his memory, and getting a first hand look at the influence he had on the culture.
Overall, the fundraiser was an immense succes. It was an amazing experience for everyone in attendance and a great way to honour Stay’s legacy. The surprise guest appearances by URL TV founder Smack and the surprise battle between Dizaster and Hollohan were two highlights of the night, and they’re sure to be remembered by fans for many years to come.
Rest In Peace, Pat Stay.
