Minecraft Movie Trailer Drops: First Look at Live-Action Epic

TLDR: The latest Minecraft Movie trailer offers fans a first look at Jason Momoa and Jack Black in an epic live-action adaptation of the beloved game, releasing April 4, 2025.

Warner Bros. Pictures has unveiled the first official trailer for A Minecraft Movie, bringing the beloved sandbox game to life with an all-star cast led by Jason Momoa and Jack Black. Directed by Jared Hess (Napoleon Dynamite, Nacho Libre), the live-action film takes fans on an imaginative journey into Minecraft’s Overworld, blending creativity and survival in a cinematic adventure.

The plot follows four misfits—Garrett “The Garbage Man” Garrison (Momoa), Henry (Sebastian Eugene Hansen), Natalie (Emma Myers), and Dawn (Danielle Brooks)—who are transported from their everyday lives into the pixelated world of Minecraft. Guided by expert crafter Steve (Jack Black), they must battle Piglins, Zombies, and their own insecurities to return home. Along the way, they rediscover their unique talents, a tribute to the game’s emphasis on creativity.

The trailer delivers striking visuals, crafted by a team that includes Oscar-winning production designer Grant Major and VFX supervisor Dan Lemmon. While fans criticized the decision to go live-action, director Jared Hess told IGN, “We knew this game represents so many different things to so many different people… Everyone has a personal connection to Minecraft.”

Hess and Minecraft producer Torfi Frans Olafsson also addressed fans’ preference for animation. Olafsson explained, “The live-action approach allows audiences to experience the Overworld in a tangible way, making it feel like they’re stepping into the game themselves.” Despite mixed reactions to early teasers, test audiences have responded positively to the film’s fresh take on the Minecraft universe.

As IGN reports, “Hess and Olafsson both added that the response they’ve been getting from early test screenings, which include early pre-vis VFX, has been much more positive than the reaction to the trailer. ‘People are like, ‘This is nothing like the trailer. This movie is awesome,’ Olafsson said.'”

Check out the first official trailer of A Minecraft Movie and mark your calendars for April 4, 2025 when it’s expected to hit theatres in North America (international release is April 2).
