Atlanta rapper Metro Marrs

Interview: Q&A

Quality Control’s Metro Marrs talks new music, his creative process & what’s next

Atlanta’s Metro Marrs has quickly become a household name in the music industry, capturing the attention of hip-hop fans worldwide with his distinct sound and catchy hooks.

This new rising talent possesses an intriguing sound that sets him apart, making him widely regarded as one of the most exciting up-and-coming artists emerging from Georgia. In a remarkably short period of time, he has developed a devoted fan base that hangs on his every word.

The music industry is notorious for its competitiveness, requiring artists to offer something unique in order to stand out. For Metro, it’s his vocal ability, lyricism, and versatility that distinguish him from the oversaturated industry that seems to churn out replicated rappers at an astonishing pace, almost devoid of creativity.

However, Metro has managed to maintain his authenticity with his core fan base while simultaneously appealing to a broader audience.

Platforms like Spotify have played a role in exposing his music to new listeners, with his “Oh Yea” record amassing over two million streams and “Sink or Swim” and “Bye Felicia” each accumulating over seven hundred thousand streams.

Metro’s music embodies Atlanta’s creative culture, providing his listeners with a unique window into the city in ways that few can. We had the opportunity to sit down with the Quality Control signee at this year’s SXSW to discuss his love for music, his creative process, and what fans can expect from him in the near future.

Metro’s most recent release is the Mikes Dimes-assisted “Payroll” which has accumulated over 180K streams on Spotify since premiering on May 24.

HipHopCanada: Our first question for you is, What’s been your favorite part about your music journey?

Metro Marrs: My favorite part is just finding myself. The best part about this music experience is working on new sounds and being able to make something different. You know, always going back and just revising something. It’s just that music is a beautiful thing, you know?

HipHopCanada: Talk to us about your last release, “Sink or Swim.” What was your mindset like when you were recording that record?

MM: When I was recording that record, I was just thinking about, you know, where I’m from and like, it’s okay to be different. I’m from Atlanta’s south side. Yeah. You know, everybody wants to sound the same and stuff, but like, you know, I just wanted to be different, you know, like a unicorn out of my city type shit.

HipHopCanada: What’s your process like in the studio?

MM: My process in the studio was really simple. Like, I find the hook first, then I’ll just go in there, lay it down, go out, listen to it, maybe revise some lyrics, go back in there, and just, catch a vibe. It really takes me like 30 minutes to complete a song.

HipHopCanada: That’s crazy. How has the experience been since signing to Quality Control?

MM: Experience has just been great, man. You feel me? I can’t complain, man. You know, we’re all family. They put me through doors I never thought I’d ever see in my life. So it’s a blessing.

HipHopCanada: That’s dope. Are there any new unreleased records you could talk to us about?

MM: I have an unreleased record. It’s called “Payroll,” featuring Mike Dimes. He’s from San Antonio, Texas. Shout out, bro. But yeah, I might drop that soon.

HipHopCanada: What can both Canadian and American audiences expect from you in the near future?

MM: In the near future, they can expect more shit like “Sink or Swim,” you feel me? You know, we turn it up, basically.

HipHopCanada: For the readers that might have never heard of you and come across this article, where can they go to support your music and you in general?

MM: They can follow me on Spotify, uh, SoundCloud, Instagram; it’s all the same, under the same name. Metro Mars with two Rs, double R like Rose Royce Metro, Mars, m-a-r-r-s.
