Toronto’s Robin Banks in stable condition after nightclub shooting

UPDATE (APR. 4 10:30 p.m.): Robin Banks’ management provided a statement on his condition and expressed appreciation for the public support they have received: “He’s good, he’s stable now. We would like everyone to check out his single ‘American Girl’ on Spotify & iTunes and thank everyone for the love and support worldwide. It’s appreciated.”

UPDATE (APR. 4 2:20 a.m.): A tweet from a new Twitter account sparked a rumour that Robin Banks had passed away from his injuries. As of 2:20 a.m. we’re told by the same sources that his condition has stabilized and that he’s scheduled for surgery. We will update the post if anything changes.

We received some really depressing news to start the week off this morning. Sources close to Robin Banks informed us that the budding Toronto rap star was hospitalized in an early morning shooting. We were told Banks was one of three people shot inside a Vaughan nightclub, Cameo Lounge, around 2:30 a.m. The other victims were a 26-year-old woman and a 26-year-old man who have yet to be identified.

While information relating to Banks’ condition – as well as what happened to him – aren’t entirely clear, comments on social media have claimed the TT rapper was shot 9 times inside the hookah bar, and is currently listed in critical condition.

Banks has been on fire the past year, building on an already impressive fanbase and finding co-signs from some of the biggest names in hip-hop. Meek Mill is one of several artists to show their concern, taking to Instagram to post a photo of Banks and the caption “Pray 4 da kid.” Meek had actually shown love to Banks just last week on his Instagram story and was on top of the news fairly quickly. No word as to whether or not those two have something in the works.

A ton of fans have been tweeting the #PrayForBanks hashtag to show their support. By roughly 11 p.m., ‘Robin Banks’ was trending in Toronto, a testament to his rising stock in the Toronto hip-hop scene.

After turning heads with the RodZilla-directed “Up Next” video in January of 2015, the UpTop Movementz rapper followed up with a highly popular feature on Top 5’s “Hall of Fame,” and various other videos that have gone on to crack the million views (and 2 million views) mark on YouTube. You can find “Up Next” on the The Entertainment mixtape. Most recently Banks been promoting buzz singles like “Loyalty So Priceless,” featuring FB, “Xennessy” and “Real Remix.”

Along with Meek Mill, Banks has also caught the attention of Drake and has been co-signed by the OVO general on social media. Drizzy popularized a term coined by Banks – “TT Right Now” – with a post on Instagram.

Our thoughts and prayers with all three victims of the shooting. We hope to see you make a speedy recovery.
