Wiz Khalifa Faces Prison Time in Romania For Weed Charges

TLDR: In July 2024, Wiz Khalifa found himself in legal trouble in Romania after being caught with weed during a tour stop. Despite global shifts toward marijuana legalization, Romania’s strict drug laws mean the rapper could face severe penalties, including a potential multi-year prison sentence.

While global attitudes toward marijuana have become more lenient in recent years, there are still many countries where strict laws can lead to serious consequences for possession or use. Rap star Wiz Khalifa experienced this firsthand during a July 2024 tour stop in Romania, where he found himself in legal trouble after being caught with weed. And this one is extra serious, since the renowned artist faces the potential of a multi-year prison sentence. Officially, Wiz was indicted during a Constanja Tribunal on October 16.

As reported by XXL, Romanian officials released a statement shortly after news of the arrest broke: “Investigations revealed that during a performance at a music festival in the Costinești resort, Constanța County, he possessed more than 18 grams of cannabis (a risk drug) and consumed another quantity of cannabis on stage in the form of a hand-rolled cigarette.”

The incident occurred while Khalifa was traveling for a concert, and authorities apprehended him for possession of a significant quantity of marijuana. This arrest adds to his history of weed-related controversies, despite his advocacy for cannabis use.

Romania’s strict drug laws make this situation particularly severe, as even personal use of marijuana is not taken lightly. Khalifa, who is known for his unapologetic love for weed, now finds himself entangled in a legal battle that could lead to significant jail time if convicted. On the flip side, he might only get a fine. His global fanbase is closely following this case, and many are concerned about the implications for the artist’s career and freedom.

This case mirrors other high-profile arrests that have occurred during concert tours, showing the clash between legal boundaries and cultural perceptions of marijuana across the globe.

Wiz was released by Romanian police and took to X (formerly Twitter) shortly after to address the incident: “Last nights show was amazing. I didn’t mean any disrespect to the country of Romania by lighting up on stage. They were very respectful and let me go. I’ll be back soon. But without a big a*s joint next time.” Just a few days ago, he released the aptly titled video, “Khalifa’s Home,” which has pulled in over 400K views to date.
