Ye controversy aside, the new Sean Leon record is arguably one of the biggest Canadian singles to drop in 2022. Released last Friday, the Bijan Amir and John Cunningham-produced “BURN EVERYTHING,” featuring the artist formerly known as Kanye West, has already racked up more than 330K streams on just Spotify alone. It’s a far cry from Leon’s biggest record to date—the Daniel Caeser-assisted “Matthew in the Middle” from 2017 which is sitting at over 4 million streams—but the single is well on its way to being on of Leon’s most successful to date.
Leon’s relationship with Ye lead to the Toronto rapper receiving writing credits on Ye’s Jesus is King in Oct. 2019, and subsequently winning Leon his first Grammy Award in March 2021. Leon would go on to contribute to Ye’s Donda in Aug. 2021, and was featured on the Donda 2 track list with his contributions to “Sci-Fi.”
According to a few sources, “BURN EVERYTHING,” is a product of the Donda 2 studio sessions—or close to that time period—and the song is now listed as appearing on Leon’s next project, In Loving Memory, originally expected Dec. 25 but seems to have been pushed back.
“Appearances from Daniel Caesar, Ye, and Jessie Reyez on my album,” Leon tweeted Nov. 22. “I was going to release it in December but I’m pushing it back to work on it some more. I want to push the sonic boundaries further, plus we had a great year and I want to focus on my family for the rest of it.”
Can’t knock that.
The supporting animated video for “BURN EVERYTHING” was made possible through PUPIL, a company founded in 2019 by Leon which describes itself as “a production and cultural organization that creates success stories through ethical development, design and distribution.”
