The death of Philly rapper YBC Dul, recently featured in YouTuber Mori’s video titled “How The Internet’s Most Hated Rapper Got Himself Killed,” has sent shockwaves through the music community and social media. A rising figure in the local rap scene, Dul, 25, was gunned down in broad daylight on August 23 in North Philadelphia. The tragic incident occurred as Dul was driving with a passenger when another car pulled up beside them at a red light, and two shooters opened fire. Struck in the chest and hand, Dul was rushed to Albert Einstein Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Dul’s death has been linked to an escalating turf war between his gang, YBC (Young Bag Chasers), and several rival groups in the area. The alleged shooter, 16-year-old Aiden Waters, is also tied to multiple other violent incidents in the days leading up to Dul’s murder. Waters is accused of fatally shooting a 16-year-old and wounding another teen in Olney just days before, as well as injuring a 14-year-old and a 43-year-old in a double shooting in Crescentville the day prior.
While YBC Dul was gaining traction as a rapper, his claim to infamy came from a viral video where he was seen desecrating a rival’s grave. Known as “Mr. Disrespectful,” Dul’s audacious antics fueled both his rise and the hostility around him. However, his father, who took to social media after his son’s death, insists that Dul’s kil ling was a setup and not a direct result of his actions.
Though Dul’s career was cut short, he left behind some notable records, including a collaboration with Chicago’s Lil Jeff and Lil Scoom89, both of whom were also victims of gun violence. His death marks another devastating chapter in the ongoing cycle of violence within Philly’s underground rap scene.
