Speaker Knockerz: The Sad Story of an Internet Rap Godfather

Hip Hop Content tells the tragic story of South Carolina-based producer and rapper, Speaker Knockerz, who is considered by many as one of the Godfathers of the Internet Rap era.

After starting to see some success in the early 2010’s, including releasing two mixtapes in 2013 and his highly popular “Lonely” single, tragedy struck in 2014. On March 6, 2014, Speaker Knockerz was found dead in his garage at his home in South Carolina. He was only 19. The county coroner declared there was no signs of foul play, or drug use involved, and ruled the cause of death as being from a heart attack.

However, in a 2023 interview with Complex, Speaker’s mom Mesha Wilson (aka Mama Knockerz), claimed the cause was neither drugs or a heart attack.

“My son did not die of any type of drug substance or anything like that and he did not have a heart attack. I just want to clear that up. That’s not what happened to him.”
