Fresh new sounds coming out of Nova Scotia. Derek MacKenzie, previously of legendary Truro, NS rap group Hip Club Groove and one-time member of one-hit wonders Len, pairs with producer Tim Horlor aka Recordface, of London, ON duo OK Cobra to form 5.1.nine.0.2. The two have “been around the block a little bit,” each with an impressive back catalog and a combined total of fifty years making music.
With their album debut, When a Name Is Just a Number, lyrics are honest and heartfelt, perhaps even mature, while Recordface’s production is layered and flows. Ten songs about life told in rap form. Big beats, big hooks, real life rap music.
“When a Name is Just a Number is the most honest and real thing I have done since [Hip Club Groove’s] Trailer Park Hip Hop, and that has been my entire journey back to where it all started.”
When a Name Is Just a Number, which features artwork by Ghettosocks, was released via Toronto-based Hand’Solo Records on Feb. 23, 2018. You can download or stream it now on Bandcamp.
