Spotify Wrapped: Drake and The Weeknd Among Most-Streamed Artists

Spotify Wrapped Most-Streamed: Drake and The Weeknd ranked among Spotify’s Top 5 global artists for 2024, solidifying Canada’s dominance in the music world.

The numbers are in for Spotify Wrapped 2024, and Canada’s musical heavyweights are shining. Taylor Swift took the crown as the most-streamed artist globally, racking up over 26.6 billion streams, but The Weeknd and Drake proved the Great White North knows how to dominate the airwaves too.

The Weeknd secured the No. 2 spot, riding the wave of his cinematic hits and haunting vocals that continue to redefine pop. Meanwhile, Drake, ever the cultural juggernaut, claimed the No. 4 spot globally, cementing his role as the most-streamed rapper in the United States. While The Weeknd didn’t crack America’s Top 5, Drake surged to second place behind Taylor Swift, showing his undeniable resilience despite various attempts to dethrone him.

“‘Tis the season to unpack Spotify Wrapped,” notes the Toronto Sun. The yearly data dive unveils not just personal listening habits but also the year’s global trends, offering a snapshot of the music that defined 2024. This year’s global Top 5 also includes Puerto Rican powerhouse Bad Bunny (No. 3) and pop’s dark angel Billie Eilish (No. 5). Swift, unsurprisingly, led both global and U.S. charts, with her album The Tortured Poets Department taking top honours on both fronts.

Drake’s reign as the top rapper in the U.S. comes as no surprise. His dual prowess in hip-hop and pop, coupled with an endless string of hits, ensures he remains a streaming titan. And while The Weeknd’s haunting soundscapes didn’t secure him a spot stateside, his global appeal continues to thrive, leaving a distinct mark on Spotify’s most-played charts.

Spotify’s growing dominance in the music industry, commanding 31% of global market share (626 million users and 246 million subscribers in over 180 markets), means that the artists on its Wrapped list represent more than just streams—they signify cultural phenomena. With The Weeknd and Drake both representing Canada in the Top 5, it’s clear the country is a powerhouse in shaping the global music landscape.

As noted by Spotify’s Head of Global Music Curation and Discovery, JJ Italiano, “Spotify Wrapped gives listeners a chance to look back at the artist and track connections they’ve made over the course of the year through their personalized Wrapped list while also exploring some of the songs and artists that helped define the year in music culture more broadly through our editorial end-of-year Wrapped playlists.”
