Hitmaker Pharrell Williams has been named the new Men’s Creative Director at Louis Vuitton. The position was previously held by the late fashion designer and visionary Virgil Abloh, who passed away in Nov. 2021 after a two year battle with cancer.
“Louis Vuitton is delighted to welcome Pharrell Williams as its new Men’s Creative Director,” the company wrote in a statement released Tuesday on Instagram.
“His first collection for Louis Vuitton will be revealed next June during Men’s Fashion Week in Paris. Pharrell Williams is a visionary whose creative universes expand from music to art, and to fashion – establishing himself as a cultural global icon over the past twenty years. The way in which he breaks boundaries across the various worlds he explores, aligns with Louis Vuitton’s status as a Cultural Maison, reinforcing its values of innovation, pioneer spirit, and entrepreneurship.”
The release also included a statement from LV Chairman and CEO Pietro Beccari:
“I am glad to welcome Pharrell back home, after our collaborations in 2004 and 2008 for Louis Vuitton, as our new Men’s Creative Director. His creative vision beyond fashion will undoubtedly lead Louis Vuitton towards a new and very exciting chapter.”
Back in 2004, Pharrell spoke with [i]Women’s Wear Daily on how his first collaboration with the company came to be.
“Marc had seen a few pictures of me in sunglasses,” he said at the time.
“He wanted to know what my take on sunglasses would be like for Louis Vuitton. He pretty much let me go into my own world. I thought that was great. At the end of the day, he is Marc Jacobs and it is Louis Vuitton, and who am I for that matter?”
As mentioned in the press release, Pharrell’s first collection for Louis Vuitton will be revealed next June during Men’s Fashion Week in Paris.
