Canadian hip-hop pioneer Michie Mee set to release new memoir in 2023

Proclaimed as the ‘Godmother of Canadian rap’, the legendary Michie Mee just recently announced that she was working on a new memoir. The book will document her life over a four-decade long career, from maneuvering the early stages of hip-hop as a male-dominated music genre, to analyzing her most notable lyrics throughout her journey.

“I wanted to live more musically through the eyes of an artist, before having to relive and write about my journey without the music,” Michie Mee told The Canadian Press on August 5th.

“Now I have to memorize the music and remember why I wrote the lyrics, so here we go again.”

Born as Michelle McCullock in Jamaica, but raised in Toronto’s Jane and Finch neighbourhood, Michie first started competing in rap battles at the age of 14. This eventually lead to Michie releasing music, and becoming one of the first Canadian rappers to find success in the U.S. market, and to collaborate with U.S. artists/producers. She delivered notable singles such as “On This Mic”, “Jamaican Funk” and “Don’t Wanna Be Your Slave”, and earned the respect of her peers across the continent, including Maestro Fresh Wes and Drake.

And Michie continues to add new gems to her catalogue. In 2020, she independently released the 18-track album, Bahdgyal’s Revenge, which features support from artists like Chuck D, JD Era, Xentury, Tonya P, and more.

The book has yet to receive a title, but is expected to be published in 2023 by Random House Canada. Stream Bahdgyal’s Revenge below.
