Warner Records’ rising star, LG Malique, delivers a striking reimagining of the multi-platinum hit “Seven Years,” with none other than the song’s original creator, Grammy-nominated artist Lukas Graham. Malique’s interpolation of the 2015 anthem layers his own story of struggle, growth, and resilience over the track’s iconic piano and heartfelt lyrics, breathing new life into the coming-of-age classic.
The song opens with Malique’s introspective take: “Life goin’ fast but we kids and we thinkin’ it’ll be that way forever,” instantly pulling listeners into a deeply personal narrative. As the song unfolds, Malique tackles heavy themes like addiction and overcoming adversity, while Lukas Graham steps in with an updated verse: “Once I was 20 years old, life finally showed me that some of those around wasn’t my homies.” The new version is a raw, emotional journey that stands on its own while honouring the original.
“Working with Malique was a refreshing experience. His perspective adds a depth to the song that I hadn’t imagined before,” says Lukas Graham. “It’s rare to find someone who can make a song like ‘Seven Years’ feel brand new, but he’s done it.”
Originally gaining buzz with an unofficial track on social media, Malique’s version of “Seven Years” has already garnered over 2.7 million views on YouTube and sparked viral moments on TikTok, SoundCloud, and Instagram. Reflecting on the track’s growing success, Malique shares, “Seven Years reflects my journey through struggles, from drugs at 13 to heartbreak and growing up in the hood. No matter where you come from, we’ve all got obstacles to face, and that’s what makes this song hit home for so many.”
Born and raised in Arkansas, LG Malique found his first love in music after a brief stint in dancing. Thanks to his grandmother, who supported his earliest recording sessions, he soon discovered his true calling behind the mic. He first turned heads on SoundCloud with his breakout track “Sideline,” which led to his indie debut EP, 100 Days, and standout singles like “Change” and “Selfish Ways.” As his fanbase grew, so did his catalog, releasing a pair of EPs — Long Story Short and Colorblind — showcasing his talent for blending raw emotion with storytelling.
