Down For Me: J-Soul tackles deceit & betrayal in new melodic single & video

A few days ago, Toronto recording artist J-Soul returned with a melodic new single powered by hitmaker Sean Momberger, and multi-Platinum Grammy-winning producer, Rasool Diaz.

“Down For Me” sees J-Soul leaning back into his R&B roots, drawing inspiration from the early 2000’s sound. The song tackles deceit in relationships, and how he thought his girl was down for him, until she discovered his music career had experienced some unforeseen setbacks. He speaks on his break from the scene after his separation from Cash Money Records, and how he felt like friends were only checking for him because of the opportunities around him.

J-Soul wrote and recorded the song in Los Angeles, and worked in-studio with Diaz and Mombergber, who has also worked with Canadian stars like Justin Bieber and NAV.

Once the record had been completed, J-Soul knew he needed the right kind of visuals to capture the song’s vibe and message. For this, he made a call back home to enlist Toronto-based director Justin Abernethy. The seasoned videographer found inspiration from David Fincher’s 2014 film, Gone Girl, which perfectly complimented the raw emotion and feelings of betrayal delivered through the single.

In the video, J-Soul’s girl turns her back on him as he isolates himself from the world in a big mansion. Suffering from his own demons, his isolation drives him to drink and smoke alone on the couch. As his girl recognizes his decline, she decides to set him up. She aims to take his money by drugging him and faking that he attacked her as she plays the damsel in distress.

You can find “Down For Me” on Apple Music, Spotify, and various other digital streaming platforms via Sad Soul Records. Check out the new video below.
