Last night at midnight, Toronto artist Jay Glavany released a brand new single titled “Fallen” in collaboration with Mauj and dF.
“Fallen” is a a declaration of love. It’s an uninhibited admission of catching feelings and falling head over heels for that special someone. It can be a challenge to properly express how you feel to someone, so Jay decided to pen this song to get everything out in the open and out on the table.
Co-produced by Jay and dF, “Fallen” is a downtempo, after-hours R&B anthem dipped in pure sensuality and soul. Mauj makes a cameo with her own verse, and cranks up the sensuality even further as her and Jay play off one another. Makes you realize how universal that feeling of love is. When you catch feels, you just know. Listen to “Fallen” below and check out our interview with Jay.
Q&A: Jay Glavany
HipHopCanada: Start off by telling me what this track means to you on a personal level and what prompted you to write it.
Jay Glavany: We all fall in love at least once in our lives and when you’re in love, sometimes it can be hard to express to that person. Mauj and I both wrote the song and we thought it would be dope to write about expressing your feelings to someone you love intimately. It’s a simple record, yet it can be deep if you want it to be.
HipHopCanada: I love that! It so perfectly captures that moment when you realize you’re in love. Tell me about the female and situation that inspired this.
Jay Glavany: I just remember the first time I fell in love – it felt exciting to feel that for someone other than myself. When we were working on the beat it felt like that first time. So when you put it together, it makes you happy and you just wanna dance.
HipHopCanada: What’s your own personal definition of love?
Jay Glavany: There are many ways to define love. To me it’s a combination of euphoria and passion; pleasurable and affectionate. When you have that feeling for someone, you’re very attached to it. The sad part is, it hurts when it’s gone.
HipHopCanada: Tell me the story behind how the collaboration with dF and Mauj came about for this.
Jay Glavany: It happened very organically. We all know each other outside of music and we were all chilling at dF’s studio… it was just a matter of being at the right place at the right time.
HipHopCanada: Walk me through the creation process behind the beat, because I know both yourself and dF cooked on that.
Jay Glavany: dF and I were playing with some sounds. We stumbled on this unique 80’s sounding synth-pad and we both knew we could work with that idea. We made it sound more of a dance record [and] did some groovy rhythms and melodies for the bounce so it can bring the beat to the next level. After having a solid beat structure, I went on to record what became the hook, and from there we knew it would be a dope record.
HipHopCanada: What’s the significance of the photo you used for your cover art for this track?
Jay Glavany: I wanted to re-create a moment and time similar to when you are surrounded and having an amazing time with someone you have feelings for. So on the artwork, it’s a capture of that memory which in this case was taken by the person whom the song is for.
