Toronto’s Blk Orchid & Empress Divine touch on the frustrations of dating with “Single Girl Blues”

Earlier this year, 2x JUNO-nominated recording artist and producer Blk Orchid teamed up with fellow Toronto talent Empress Divine for “Single Girl Blues.”

It’s one of several new releases from Orchid, who also recently played a major part in the new Maestro Fresh Wes “Young Maestro” concept album, Julia the Great. Orchid produced six songs on the record and was featured on the intro track, “School is Back.”

Along with becoming a semifinalist in the 2017 Battle of the Beat Makers, Orchid has built up an impressive production resume that includes work alongside prolific Jamaican duo Sly and Robbie, and an eye-opening discography featuring work with artists like Jamaican MC DeeWunn, dancehall legend, Red Rat, and a ton of notable Canadians.

“Single Girl Blues” is presented by Black Orchid Productions and Empress Divine Productions, and dropped with an official visualizer which you can check out below.

“Written and produced by Orchid and Divine, these two powerhouses in the reggae and dancehall scene come together on this very relatable track that women may face and the frustrations of dating that come along with it.”

After the release of “Single Girl Blues” in August, Orchid dropped a new collaboration in late September with Bay Area-native, Brooke D. “Body Shivers,” which was produced by Orchid, was described by the Toronto talent on Instagram as the soundtrack to her embracing her own sensuality as she lives her best life.

There’s plenty of other ways to get familiar with Orchid’s talents—including a massive Spotify playlist featuring her production work—but you won’t want to miss her catchy “Chil With You” single which was also featured on the AK Productions compilation, Scope of Work 2.

Along with her releases, Blk Orchid is also the founder and curator of That’s a Dope Sample, where she teaches about the art of sampling, breaks down samples and the interpolations in the various genres of music.
