NYC high school senior turned mainstream rapper Lil Mabu recently dropped a heartfelt video for fans from his new college dorm room.
The video, posted to Mabu’s YouTube channel as “why i’ve been gone…,” sees the young star breaking down how the sudden rise to fame affected him, and what it cost him on a personal level. He goes on to explain that he took a few steps to find balance, between fame and his personal life, and he made the decision to enroll in college.
He acknowledges that a lot of people have questioned his decision to go back to school but he stresses that he’s confident his loyal, growing fanbase will allow him to pursue both music and education with out skipping a beat. He also shoots down any insinuations floating around that he’s an industry plant.
“So here I am, in my dorm room… not that much space… uhhh.. and I don’t think anybody’s done this before, like college student turned mainstream rapper?! But, if any artist and their fanbase can do it, it’s us. We’re building an army, it’s like a fucking Mabu militia. We’re unstoppable. And, contrary to popular belief–you know I don’t address nothing–but I don’t have a manager, I’m not signed to a label, and my father is not in the music business.”
Lil Mabu’s most recent release to hit DSPs is his “RICH SHOLAR” single which dropped back in June. The music video just recently cracked 10 million views on YouTube, and the single has over 13.1 million streams on just Spotify alone.
His biggest song on Spotify, “NO SNITCHING” with Dusty Locane, he’s closing in on 100 million streams.
In his dorm room video to fans, he mentions a new song and video which we’re expecting to see pretty soon:
“I’m going to try and give you more of a window into my personal life because this is a journey we’re going to be on together. So, my recent expereience has only fuelled more of my musical visions. Like over the summer, I wrote a song, and I shot a video about what I exactly just described to you, and I hope it helps all of of you think about your life and living it on your own terms. I love y’all. Let’s make history.”
